First established in 1868 as a U.S. Army post by Captain William H. Penrose, 3rd U.S. Infantry, in Bent County, Colorado. Named after Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon (Cullum 1069), who was the first Union General killed in the U.S. Civil War, 10 Aug 1861, in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.
